In particular, we will ask them how they are specifically targeting youths in Japan to build the next outbound wave.

Building Next Generation Destinations

Buoyed by the inbound rush, investors are rushing to develop new destinations in Japan, to give the growing hordes of travellers a choice from the usual hot spots. We put the spotlight on two ambitious projects – one to transform one of Japan’s oldest ski areas, Myoko Kogen, into an all‑season luxury destination that can rival the likes of Niseko, Aspen and Whistler and the other, Azuma Farm Koiwai, a joint venture between legendary hotelier of Aman fame, Adrian Zecha and JR East.

When Is Enough Enough? Tackling Overtourism in Japan

Japan’s inbound tourism is at an all-time high. According to the Japan Tourism Agency, spending by tourists to Japan in 2024 increased by more than 50% from 2023, exceeding ¥8 trillion JPY (US$51.5 billion) for the first time. The Japan National Tourism Organization estimates the number of visitors to Japan in 2024 at 36.87 million, the highest annual figure ever. It has already surpassed electronic parts and steel, expanding to become the nation’s second-largest “export industry” after motor vehicles. And the government has set a goal of attracting 60 million visitors to Japan in 2030. How will Japan manage this growth? How will it address overtourism complaints by residents and visitors? What’s the vision and longterm plan?
