The past two years certainly forced us to confront some harsh truths about our industry. How vulnerable we are to forces beyond our control. How exposed we were when things came crashing down. How disjointed we are as an industry when it comes to handling a crisis of such a global, monumental nature. Yet we rose to the occasion, met the challenges head-on and after much pain, have come out on the other side. We thought anew, re-evaluated old assumptions, embraced new ways, tried new models. What does the new world look like? Are we better prepared to face it? Let’s get started.
As Calvin Russell sings in “Crossroads,” “I’m standing at the crossroads, there are many roads to take … one path leads to paradise, one path leads to pain, one path leads to freedom. But they all look the same.” In this session, we hear from two generations of leaders – those who rode the first wave of online travel and those who emerged in the second wave – and we pick their brains on how we can take the best of both worlds to forge a better road ahead. As is said, “those who fail to learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat it”.

At the same time, the past two years have taught us that the earth needs rejuvenation. Mankind, too. How can travel lead the way in this new age of discovery?

If there’s one thing the pandemic taught us, it’s the need for collaboration and partnerships – most of us would not have made it through alone. It also accelerated the quest to create seamless end-to-end experiences for our customers and that needs collaboration between the silos within travel. In this session, we find out how two founders of different B2B businesses – a technology enabler of low cost carrier content who wants to make it easier for everyone to fly and a horizontal payments business, getting into travel and recently invested in by Ant Group – sees the new world of collaboration, low cost flights and cross-border payments.

Nikoi & Cempedak Island
Andrew trained as a chartered accountant in Sydney and spent the first 20 years of his career trading distressed debt, one of the more esoteric areas of investment banking. From Sydney he travelled to Chile to work, then London and on to Singapore where he lives today. Whilst in Singapore he stumbled across the unspoilt beaches and islands of nearby Indonesia. Together with some friends they acquired the leasehold titles to an island called Nikoi in 2004. Plans to develop it were hatched whilst camping on the island with their families. The success of Nikoi led to Andrew quitting his job in 2008 to focus all of his efforts on future plans, which included building another island called Cempedak built entirely of bamboo. In 2010 Andrew and his partners established a foundation called The Island Foundation to help improve education standards amongst local children.

When we were grounded, the sector that underwent the most change was the stuff that happens on the ground and in-destination. Attractions and tours and activities providers had to find new, domestic customers. Not only that, they had to find new ways to operate safely amid changing restrictions and regulations and as customer behaviour changed, they had to invest in tech and adapt to the new world. What has come out of the maelstrom? We get different perspectives on the changes that happened – from attractions undergoing digital transformation to players trying to change it up for the new world, and the way we play, eat and pay.

Maison de L’Asie
Elizabeth Liau, founder of Maison de L’Asie, is a storyteller at heart.
Influenced by her grandfather, Elizabeth’s love of cinema, music and art has grown over the years as a true global citizen. She grew up in Singapore, with Shanghainese, Malay and Dutch Indonesian heritage, and has lived around the world – from Australia to Dubai, New York to South America, London to Paris – all the while absorbing and learning from these diverse cultures and environments.
Upon returning to Asia, she soon started travelling more around the region, and rediscovered its unique culture and beauty with new eyes. Choosing the medium of perfumery to tell her stories around Asia was an obvious choice, expanding on her enduring passion for scent and the grand classics of French perfumery. Elizabeth created bespoke fragrances for her personal use, to transcribe the stories of her life and travels– which opened conversations with curious people, finding her created scents evocative and intriguing. She immediately understood the power of perfume as memory and emotion writ large, carrying people through time and place like invisible tapestries or photographs in an instant.
The powerful ties between scent and memory, where a beautiful fragrance triggers recollections of childhood memories and moments of our intricate and unique lives, provide the opportunity to express stories that cannot be articulated by words alone.
Presented in combination with evocative imagery of her own creation, those scented stories – olfactive snapshots and cinematic perfumes – evolved to form the foundation of Maison de L’Asie.

Putting things in context, flight search started in the early 2000s. Skyscanner was first in 2001, KAYAK followed in 2004, Qunar took on China in 2005, the same year that Wego attempted to bridge South-east Asia. Ixigo took India in 2007, the same year that Hopper muscled its way into the North American market; Etraveli Group has been acquired by Booking Holdings for €1.6 billion (pending approval); and ixigo has carved out a completely new model in its home market, transforming to OTA, and has declared IPO intentions. Meanwhile, in Japan, founders of Travel.jp took a different path and perhaps seeing the challenges for local search diversified with a content-led search model with Trip101. The pandemic has reset the stage. Let’s see what these players are planning amid the soul-searching for their meaning and relevance in the new world, even with the big G hanging over their heads.

It can be said that she who controls the wallets controls the hearts and minds – fintech has become as much of travel as flights or hotels or tours and activities. Indeed, as Agoda’s Timothy Hughes said in a recent interview, “If you’re not a fintech company as a travel company, you’re missing a beat. We spend as much time thinking about payments as we do about travel.” So how has the payments landscape changed the past two years? What are the new models out there, beyond Buy Now, Pay Later – a model of payment Traveloka, for example, introduced in 2018 for the Indonesian consumer? Who’s doing what? We get a look in with this session.

In 2020, the Wellness economy was valued at US$4.4 trillion, according to a report by Goco Hospitality and Horwath HTL. Of that, wellness tourism was valued at US$436 billion. No wonder new models in hospitality are being built around wellness, a trend which accelerated during the pandemic as health consciousness reached new highs. Then there’s also the rise of community-powered hospitality with new and growing number of independent developers and operators who focus on being community driven. We examine these trends from the perspective of two hotel brands, one founded in 1991, long before wellness became a thing, and one new entrant from Thailand. And we add a banker and investor into the mix to find out where the money flow’s going in new hospitality models.

But what is the situation in Asia? The market here is markedly different from the rest of the world. It is fragmented, there’s a huge SME factor and the line between leisure and business has gotten even more blurred with the pandemic. This session will cover the top trends driving change in the corporate travel world – changing traveller behaviour, data innovation, sustainability and fintech.

Mr. Rippel led all of Naspers’ investments in Flipkart, where he served as Naspers’ appointed Director to the Board for six years. Walmart invested US$16 billion to obtain an approximate 77 percent shareholding at closing. As part of this transaction, Naspers exited fully, selling its 11.2% percent stake for $2.2 billion. The investment was a $1.6bn or 3.6x return over six years, at an estimated 29% IRR.
Mr. Rippel joined Naspers in January 2009 as head of business development in South-east Asia before managing e-commerce in Africa and Middle East shortly after. From 2011 to 2014 he oversaw e- commerce in Southeast Asia, India and Africa, after which he was managing online services segments including e-tail outside of Europe, travel, real estate, and mobile services.
Before working for Naspers, Mr. Rippel spent nine years at eBay – first in his home country Germany and then as part of the Asia-Pacific region in China, Korea, and South-east Asia. There, he mostly focused on strategy, business development, as well as category management and marketing operations. Mr. Rippel is of dual Asian and European ancestry.
